September 2016

Greetings to our friends in the produce business:

This is the annual update and crop report for Norm Nelson, Inc. Compared to last year, this Summer and growing season have been nearly ideal! The crop looks very good and given decent Fall weather we should have a good harvest.

We plan to start our packing season on Wednesday – September 7. We are waiting until this date to get our first three varieties – red, yellow, and white – mature enough to harvest without much skinning and to get to market with top quality potatoes. The purples always require more days to mature and we expect to harvest purple potatoes in mid-October. Our list of potato varieties has some changes for the 2016 season. The red potatoes will still all be the Chieftain variety. But the whites will be Harmony, Cascade and a new one called Nadine. Again we will have multiple varieties of yellows with Satina, Agata, Alegria and Elfe. As in past years, we will pack straight from the field during September and October for all varieties. Then come November will pack reds, yellows and purples out of our storage system but will still pack the whites out of the field. By packing whites from the field, we keep that high color and quality as all in the market expect from the Double N carton.

Our product lineup is always led by the premium quality “Double N” label. For customers needing a lower cost option, we pack a second label US#1 – “Golden Seal” and the US#2 package is the popular “Pedigree” label. You can always check all the consumer pack options and see the history of the Nelson operation by checking our website at: www.doublenpotatoes.com

We always like to have a section in the newsletter that highlights changes in the Double N operation. This year you will have a new person to visit with in the shipping and food safety areas. Jason Garten started here June 1 as Keith Jacobson retired earlier this year. Please call Jason with any questions in these areas! You will also notice a new look on the Double N website. Please check our website www.doublenpotatoes.com this Fall to see changes that will make our website more interesting and user friendly.

As we look forward to the coming season with the excitement that harvest always brings, we also want to state our appreciation for all our customers and supporters over the years. We are looking forward to visiting with all our friends from past years and making new relationships. Give Scott Wharton or Myron Ayers a call to hear all about the Double N program and for all your colored potato needs.

Sincerely,

Myron Ayers, Sales Manager
