September 2023

Dear partners in produce,

As always, I hope this letter finds you in good spirits and good health. September’s potato crop is going to be ready a little earlier for Norm Nelson Inc. this year. We had an ideal spring planting season, not missing a single day due to a rainout. After planting we received minimal rain through the growing season, and we were able to keep the fields well irrigated. Reports from the field sound as promising as they’ve ever been with good size, yield and quality.

We are looking to start our packing plant on Thursday, September 7th or Friday, September 8th. Those first couple of days we will be running whites and yellows only with reds coming shortly behind on Monday, September 11th. Purples will be coming along a little later in the month. We will pack all varieties fresh from the field through early to mid-November. After that our potatoes will come out of our storage system for the remainder of the packing season.

For the past couple of years, you may remember us being out of white potatoes in early to mid-December. We had many requests from customers that we find a way to extend our white potato season. We didn’t want you to think those requests were falling upon deaf ears, so we have increased our white potato acreage and built a brand new storage building. The storage building will handle all colors of potatoes, but the ability to temporarily store white potatoes in it was a big driver in its construction.

You can always check our consumer pack options and see the Nelson family story on our website at www.doublenpotatoes.com. We are looking forward to starting a new season with our wonderful customers as well as seeing our 2023 crop come out of the ground. Scott Wharton is looking forward to handling all of your colored potato needs through the 2023 season.

Sincerely,

Ryan Schols, Chief Financial Officer
